More about IWC IW544501 Portuguese Vintage Collection SS

This is a stainless steel IWC Portuguese Hand Wound IW544501. It has an alligator leather strap with a matching 18K stainless steel tang buckle. The solid 44mm diameter three-body case, curved lugs, and grooved bezel are polished. The sapphire crystal display case back is secured with 6 screws. The dial is black with applied steel Arabic numeral and baton hour markers, steel feuille hands, and an outer minute track. There is a small seconds subsidiary dial at 6 o'clock, and it has a 46-hour power reserve at full wind. It's water resistant to 25 meters/80 feet. The 10mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed.

This IWC Portuguese Hand Wound IW544501 has a mechanical IWC manual winding caliber 98295 movement that's rhodium plated with fausses cotes embellishment. It's constructed with 18 jewels, a monometallic balance adjusted for heat, cold, and 5 positions, a shock absorber mechanism, and a straight-line lever escapement. There is a self-compensating Breguet balance spring, and an index regulator.

In 1939 IWC debuted the round case design Portuguese collection. They intended to pay homage to Portugal’s most prominent seafaring explorers including Ferdinand Magellan, Vasco da Gama, and Bartolomeu Dias. This recently produced vintage Portuguese watch is a homage to those first 1939 timepieces that celebrated the tradition of nautical instruments with contemporary designs and movements.
