More about Calatrava 2551 Automatic 'DISCO VOLANTE' 18K Yellow Gold

This is a c. 1958 18k yellow gold Patek Philippe Calatrava 'DISCO VOLANTE' 2551. It has a leather strap with an 18k yellow gold tang buckle, and an acrylic crystal. It has a pull out winding crown with the double "P" emblem, and there is a solid screw down case back inside of which is engraved "PATEK PHILIPPE & CO – GENEVE – SWISS – REF 2551," and several hallmarks. The 36mm two-body case, stepped downturned lugs, and stepped bezel, have an original, bright patina. It has the original silver dial with applied yellow gold dart-shaped hour markers, and the original gold dauphine hands. There is a dot minute scale around the perimeter, and a "cross-hair," running small seconds subsidiary dial with a gold indicator hand is at 6 o'clock. It's water resistant to 25 meters/80 feet, and the 10.3mm thick case, movement and dial are all signed. This Patek Philippe Calatrava 'DISCO VOLANTE' 2551 has a first generation mechanical automatic self-winding Patek Philippe caliber 12-600AT movement. It's double stamped with the Seal of Geneva, The Caliber 12-600AT movement has 30 jewels, a rhodium plated straight-line lever escapement, with a Gyromax balance adjusted for cold, heat, isochronism and five positions. There is a shock absorber, an 18K gold rotor with guilloche patterning, bi-directional winding, a self-compensating Breguet free-sprung balance spring, and a swan-neck micrometer regulator. The innovational 12-600AT automatic movement made its debut at the 1953 Basel Fair. The Patek Philippe Calatrava 'DISCO VOLANTE' 2551 was produced from 1954 until 1960. "Disco Volante" translates to "flying saucher," and the shape of this watch references UFO sightings over Europe in the early 1950's.
