More about Sea Hawk II John Harrison SS / 18K White Gold Bezel

This is a stainless steel Girard Perregaux Sea Hawk II John Harrison Edition 49910-0-58-7147. The solid three-body case and curved lugs are polished and brushed, with an 18K white gold graduated, unidirectional revolving bezel indicating elapsed time, with a hobnail decoration around the rim. The screwed-down case back has six screws, and there is screwed-down winding-crown at 4 o'clock with a crown guard. The stainless steel bracelet has brushed center links and a double deployant buckle. The white dial has applied silver hour index markers at 9, 12, and 3 o'clock, with luminous white gold arrow hands, and baton markers at the remaining hours. The date aperture is between 1 and 2 o'clock, and there is an outer minute track, a subsidiary seconds dial between 10 and 11 o'clock, and a semicircular power reserve indication at 6. It's water resistant to 300 meters and the power reserve is 45 hours at full wind. The automatic Girard Perregaux calibre 33 RO movement is rhodium-plated, and it's constructed with 27 jewels, and a straight-line lever escapement. It has a monometallic balance adjusted to heat, cold, and 5 positions, a shock absorber mechanism, a self-compensating flat balance spring, and a hack mechanism. The case, dial, and movement are all signed. Girard Perregaux made this as an homage to a visionary pioneer in horology. On the dial of this limited edition watch is: "To John Harrison." Harrison (1693-1776), an Englishman, was a self-educated carpenter and clockmaker who invented the marine chronometer, a brilliant device that solved the monumental problem of establishing the East-West position (longitude) of a ship at sea. This revolutionized long-distance sea travel by making it much safer.
