More about Oyster 6234 Chronograph Pre Daytona SS Circa 1958

This is a vintage 1958 stainless steel Rolex Oyster Chronograph Pre-Daytona 6234. There is a solid screw-down case back and winding crown, and pump chronograph pushers. The 36mm diameter solid three-body case, downturned lugs, and angled bezel are polished/brushed. The case is anti-magnetic, and the original white dial has developed a patina, as do the lume plots. It has applied steel dart hour indexes with luminous dots, luminous leaf hands, a center sweep second hand, and a minute/one-fifth second track. There is a blue telemeter track, and a tachymeter scale to 1000 uph around the perimeter. The three iconic subsidiary dials include a small constant seconds register at 9 o'clock, a 12-hour chronograph dial is at 6 o'clock, and the 30-minute register is at 3 o'clock. The 14mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. This Rolex Oyster Chronograph Pre-Daytona 6234 has a mechanical manually wound Valjoux caliber 72 column wheel chronograph movement that's rhodium-plated. It's constructed with 17 jewels, a shock absorber device, and a straight-line lever escapement. It has a monometallic balance, and a self-compensating Breguet balance spring. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 18000 vph (2.5 Hz). This Rolex Oyster Chronograph Pre-Daytona, reference 6234, is usually considered the grandfather and direct precursor of the Rolex Daytona. It was produced from 1955 to 1961, and there were about 2300 stainless steel examples made.
