More about Breitling 809 Vintage Cosmonaute Navitimer 809 Stunning Patina

This is a vintage stainless steel c. 1965 Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute 809. It has a leather strap with a stainless steel clasp, and an acrylic crystal. It has a screw down winding crown, round chronograph push buttons, and a solid snap down case back stamped with "STAINLESS STEEL BACK – BREITLING – 809." The 42mm diameter solid three-body case, curved lugs, and flat knurled unidirectional rotating bezel are polished/brushed. The dial is black with gilt Arabic numeral 24-hour markers on the even hours, and square gold hour indices around a luminous white minute/one-fifth second scale. It includes outer luminous white telemeter scales for mph to km conversions, etc., and around the white perimeter rehaut is a fourth black slide rule scale. It has polished steel pointed baton hands with luminous aged tritium inserts, and a center sweep chronograph hand with a luminous arrow tip. There are three white "pie tin" subsidiary dials with black Arabic numerals, markers, and black indicator hands, including a running small constant seconds register at 9 o'clock, a 12-hour chronograph totalizer at 6 o'clock, and there is a 30-minute chronograph register at 3 o'clock. It has no water resistance, it has a 45-hour power reserve at full winding, and the 13mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed.

This Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute 809 has a mechanical manually wound Venus caliber 178 movement. It's constructed with 17 jewels, a shock absorber device, and a straight-line lever escapement. It includes a monometallic balance, an index regulator, a blued steel flat Breguet balance spring, and the mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 18,000 vph (2.5 Hz).

This is an early Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute 809, similar to the watch that Mercury-Aurora 7 astronaut Scott Carpenter wore into space in 1962. It was introduced as the "Cosmonaute" in 1961.
