More about Autavia 2446 "Jochen Rindt" Panda Chronograph

This is a vintage c. late 1960's-early 1970's stainless-steel Heuer Autavia "Jochen Rindt" Chronograph 2446. It includes a period correct black racing strap with a stainless steel Heuer tang buckle and an acrylic crystal. It has a screw down signed oversize winding crown, round chronograph push buttons, and a screw down solid case back engraved with "AUTAVIA – HEUER – STAINLESS STEEL -CHRONOGRAPH – WATERPROOF GUARANTEED 330 FT UNDER WATER." The 38.5mm diameter solid three-body case, curved lugs, and knurled rotating bidirectional black bezel with a 12-hour Arabic numeral scale, are polished/brushed. The "Panda" dial is black with faceted applied rectangular steel hour indices with luminous end pips surrounded by a white perimeter second/minute scale. It has steel pointed fat baton hour and minute hands with luminous inserts, and a luminous white center sweep second hand. There are three recessed white "pie tin" style subsidiary dials with concentric circle guilloche, black Arabic numerals, markers, and black indicator hands, including a constant running small seconds register at 9 o'clock, a 12-hour chronograph totalizer at 6 o'clock, and there is a 30-minute chronograph counter at the 3 o'clock position. It has a 48-hour power reserve at full winding, and the 13.5mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. This Heuer Autavia "Jochen Rindt" Chronograph 2446 has a mechanical manual winding Valjoux 72 column wheel chronograph movement with a lateral clutch (nicknamed "The Driver's Engine), the same movement that powered the Rolex Daytona for years. It's constructed with 17 jewels, an Incabloc anti-shock system, a self-compensating flat balance, and a Breguet hairspring. The mechanism oscillates at a frequency of 18,000 vph (2.5Hz). The Heuer Autavia "Jochen Rindt" Chronograph 2446 was introduced in the early 1970's to commemorate German racing driver Jochen Rindt who won the Dutch Grand Prix in 1970.
